Sinopsis

All goods and services in our economy, cause environmental impacts throughout their life cycle, impacts that are related to activities such as the extraction of raw materials, in-plant manufacturing, and the abandonment of the good at the end of its useful life, in that sense; the aggregate “life cycle” environmental impact is usually quite larger than the impact measured only to the manufacturing process and deals with multiple environmental aspects such as climate change, water impact and land use, etc.

Thus, product marketers seeking to improve their environmental management have to consider the full life cycle impact of their products, an impact that is associated with each item from the time it is produced until it is put on sale, i.e. it relates to the direct environmental impact generated by the marketer in its establishment (for example, when consuming electricity to light the premises).

There is also the indirect environmental impact (caused during the manufacture of the good that is caused and even when the product is discarded).

By virtue of the above, the importance of properly managing the “programmed expiration” of items subject to obsolescence is highlighted: Products such as processed foods, electronic devices and cotton textiles, when they expire by standard practice, which are promptly disposed of in a landfill, according to law.

Fifty-eight generic mass consumption products currently offered in sales centers to the general public were evaluated, distributed in 10 product groups that are distributed among: Food, Pet supplies, Personal care items, Beverages, Electronics, Toys, Stationery, Cleaning supplies and Clothing.

For each product studied, 4 categories of environmental impact were evaluated, comprising:

– Climate impact (expressed in kg of gases);

– Water impact (expressed in liters of water);

– Energy consumption (expressed in kWh); and

– Land use (expressed in m2 of land).

La Solución AMBIDES

Establish impact indicators both in terms of loss of resources (energy, water and land), as well as the generation of emissions from the emissions, due to the waste of mass consumption products that are close to their expiration date, obsolete and deteriorated.
